Rwanda and the Crisis Region of Eastern Congo

Rwanda and the Crisis Region of Eastern Congo

The Rwanda Association Southern Wine Route and the Rwanda Working Group in Herxheim invite you to a lecture titled “Rwanda and the Crisis Region of Eastern Congo” about the current situation in the Rhineland-Palatinate partner country. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 7 PM, at the House of Encounter at Leonhard-Peters-Str. 3 in Herxheim. Admission is free.

The evening’s speaker is Michael Nieden, former executive director of the Partnership Association Rhineland-Palatinate/Rwanda e.V. He has known Rwanda and the region for decades through numerous visits and projects and has been on site regularly in recent years. In his lecture, he will examine the origins and development of the conflict, but will focus on the current situation and perspectives for the region.

Herxheim and the Southern Wine Route have been active in Rwanda since the beginning of the state partnership of Rhineland-Palatinate in the 1980s. The projects supported by the partnerships of SÜW and Herxheim, some for many years, are located in northern Rwanda and thus near the border with the conflict region. Through their partners in Rwanda, the local associations know that the conflicts in Eastern Congo have so far had no direct impact on the work in the partnership projects in Rwanda. The lecture aims to shed light on the background and inform about the situation of project work.
